Tattered Heart Summer Solstice

June 21, 2014

I have this idea that solstices are more interesting than the equinoxes. But that’s probably just because I like the word so much better. A solstice is one of the few days of the year that feels like it has magic inherent in it; that possibilities are more wild and freedom is more tangible.

Because when the world is in transition, it is not a hard and fast thing. And if the world itself is malleable, perhaps our reality is too, just for a moment.

Of course, they usually end up being pretty much like every other day and by the time 11am rolls around I’ve completely forgotten it’s the solstice. But I still like the idea of them. So when I was trying to make the magic more alive in Tattered Heart I ended up writing one.

  1. You know, I completely forgot about the summer solstice! It just was another day for me. It’s sort of sad, because I much rather have remembered and had a magical moment like this! We seem to get so swept in our minds and what’s going on in society that just reading something like this, where people celebrate the earth and see beauty in the air, is quite beautiful! Thanks for sharing 🙂

to be fair, I totally forget most years too 🙂 Because you’re right, it is so easy to get caught up in the ordinary day to day. And we live in a world that kind of encourages that practical, normality. But a solstice is a fun idea when I do remember.

Heh, the summer solstice isn’t that big a deal for me because there aren’t any seasons where I live, unfortunately! (Unless you count the rainy and dry seasons.) But this was a beautiful passage, Annie. I love how you described their surroundings: “mint and vanilla leaves” — gorgeous! And you really were able to create a truly magical and haunting atmosphere. It would be a cool ritual to witness. 🙂

I didn’t have any seasons when I lived in LA really, so I understand. The weird thing I found is that it made it hard to remember when certain things happened – because there were no demarcation points in the year to sort of separate one month or one year from another.
And thank you!! I can’t wait to see what my composer comes up with for this scene for the audiobook 🙂
