So, I’m not normally a big football fan. But Geoph* is a huge Boston fan and has been dragging me (not unwillingly) to games at the pub and everything. And I have to admit that this was a good year to be a Patriots fan – not just because they won almost every game, but because they were fun to watch. The reason they won almost every game is because it was almost like they were just in a different league than everyone else. Even two weeks ago in the play off game. I can’t honestly remember who they were playing but I remember thinking that it looked like the […]
We are all, everyone one of us making history now. The time for sitting on the fence is over. The time for greatness is now. Each of you has a role to play, your only choice is whether you accept it or have it thrust upon you… I know it’s tempting to think that we can hold on to the past, everything that’s safe and easy. But we cannot. And safe and easy are what set us on the path to catastrophe in the first place. The chains of comfort are what keep us from reaching for a better world. – Wrath of Graham It’s just the first episode of […]
So the Olympic Committee is banning improper English on signs for when all the Olympians and tourists show up. Prime example: “Shangri-La is in you mind, but your Buffalo is not.” I need to find ways to work that into casual conversation.
Some days you’re driving and someone in a car near you is smoking and it wafts into your car and every now and then, when the right melancholy song is on the radio, it smells good. Maybe you have to have smoked once or twice for that to be the case. To have felt it seer away pain and grief and anger and whatever else you couldn’t handle at the time. Maybe it just reminds you of being twenty; the freedom of a simpler life when you understood less but maybe experienced more, felt everything because it was difficult and exciting and you were still raw. But you grew up […]
So, the WB aired it’s final episodes last night. Before I get to what I thought let me explain why it sort of matters. I was watching Buffy when the WB as an entity came into being for me. I was in college taking some sort of marketing/communication courses that tie in to this story. I don’t remember how but I vaguely remember that they do; they were an influence on my perception of all this. Most importantly I was working for a company that had a huge focus on into brand image and brand identity. I was impressed upon with this brand identity and the importance of keeping that identity […]
I’ve always loved John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” My heart has known that it’s a powerful verse, and this morning I realized it’s in the same way my heart found one of my favorite lines in Lord of the Rings (the book – because the line isn’t in the movie, although a hollow version of the scene is in the extended Return of the King) Jesus doesn’t bother with our tribulations. He goes beyond that and overcomes the whole of the world that encompasses, houses, […]
I drove up to the post office on my lunch today, like I do most days. As I was parking I thought, “How many months have I been parking at this post office?” and “How long am I going to let this go on?” No interesting mail so I get back in the car to drive to work and realize that it’s a gorgeous day. I roll down my window and open my sun roof and as I’m driving I consider calling my boss and telling him that I’m going to keep driving and not come back to work today. I laugh at the idea and simultaneously really like it. […]
